Here’s the current (very rough) Fight Setup screen for the complete BASTON rework:

Right now, you can:

  • Select from no players up to four players. The players are the first four portraits in the list.
  • Create between 2 and 32 fighters. (I even tried 128 — it works fine, but the gameplay becomes a mess 😅)
  • Select a fighter by clicking their portrait.
  • Press the "Random" button to randomize everything.

What I’d like to add:

Team creation

  • How? Maybe click the "Free-for-all" button to switch to "Team Mode"? Or something else entirely — like players taking turns to pick fighters for their teams, just like choosing football teams in the schoolyard.
  • How many teams? I’m thinking: no teams, or 2 to 4 teams.

Select game mode

Right now, I’ve added a placeholder button to choose between Free-for-all and Team Mode.

But I’ve been thinking about adding other modes later on, like:

  • Zone Defense
  • Capture the Flag
  • Last Survivor
  • Flood...

These will come later, once the core is rock solid.

Should we keep the fighter selector (à la Dragon Ball Devolution)?

Honestly, I’d prefer to drop it. Instead, we could display only the fighters present in the collection folder, without duplicates. That way, players don't waste time assigning fighters one by one.

But what about handling thousands of fighters?

  • The portrait list doesn’t have to be static.
  • It could become a giant scrollable map of portraits available in the collection screen.
  • If we limit it to 32 fighters per match, that means a maximum of 8 fighters per team — so setup time stays reasonable.

Everything is possible, so if you have ideas or good examples to share, you’re more than welcome!
🕹️ One restriction, though: it must be fully manageable with only a gamepad, and only a mouse/touchscreen.

Would it be ok if we have a sorting system in which we can filter each fighter by type

For example, Goku is a brawler with ranged ki attacks while Sonic is a speedster. With a sorting system this would then allow players to find a character quickly instead of endlessly scrolling through.

Yeah, it would be ok. But completely out of the current scope. And it would be a research by name or universe, like the old BASTON, not by subjective fan lore 😅

De inicio me gusta la idea de que los personajes existan dentro de una cuadricula en el frente tal y como ejemplifica esta imagen. Funciona mejor que tener esa tira de portrites enorme de Dragon Ball Devolution. (no te ofendas)

It’s also pretty off-topic for now, and it doesn’t address the main issue we clearly see on this awful Mugen’s selection screen.

That said, the fighter visualization concept is an interesting addition. I'll keep that in mind.
